Abstract

The world continues to be plagued by the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare workers have been involved in outbreaks of the disease. Investigating an ongoing outbreak is a task that requires quick acting and correct responding of the local health team to mitigate and suppress its effects in a timely manner. This article is aimed at describing the methodology used in the study of a COVID-19 outbreak in a hospital institution. A descriptive study, with the application of the methodology used for the study of an outbreak based on ordered and sequential steps. The study universe comprised 15 workers from the kitchen-diner area of the National Center of Minimal Access Surgery. The outbreak was notified on May 6, 2021, and the index case and primary case were reported. Five close contacts were isolated. Seven workers were infected, all from the same working shift. The outbreak had a short duration of six days. The triggering factors were: lack of social distancing, inadequate use of the mask, closed work environment, poor ventilation. The methodology used prevented other workers from the same area to become ill and the spreading of the outbreak in the institution.
