Abstract

Introduction:  Since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, other diseases, such as dengue, are present in Colombia. These two viruses coexist in different parts of the world, which seems to affect the registry of cases of the latter, given that the total of reported cases decreased nationwide in 2019 and 2021.

Objective:  To analyze the epidemiological behavior of dengue in times of COVID-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2021 in Colombia.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study in which the current epidemiologic trends of both diseases in Colombia were analyzed based on data from the epidemiological bulletin of the National Institute of Health to compare the epidemiological behavior of dengue prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Results: Since the first COVID-19 case was notified in Colombia, the number of reported dengue cases decreased, which could be associated to the alarm triggered by the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, influencing the registry of dengue cases.

Conclusions: Dengue and COVID-19 co-epidemics in Colombia are a burden for the health system. Therefore, implementing preventive measures to mitigate the spread of both viruses is vital.
