Abstract

Objective: Estimate the prevalence of latent and overall tuberculosis infection, as well as their predictive factors, in male prisoners on admission to a penitentiary.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted whose target population was the inmates admitted to the most densely populated penitentiary in Ecuador from January to March 2019. A sample of 634 inmates was selected, 422 of whom underwent tuberculin skin testing (PPD). Identification was made of sociodemographic, epidemiological, clinical and anthropometric characteristics, and the results of the diagnostic tests tuberculin skin test, HIV and glycemia. Prevalence and prevalence ratio were estimated with risk factors, and logistic regression analysis was used to determine associated factors. Statistical significance was established for p values under 0.05.

Results: The prevalence rate of latent tuberculosis was 51.4% (217/422), CI 95% (46.6-56.2) and the overall tuberculosis infection rate was 53.5%, CI 95% (48.9-58.2). A statistical association was not found with risk factors such as functional illiteracy, tobacco consumption, alcohol abuse, malnutrition, hyperglycemia or HIV infection.

Conclusions: The latent infection rate was high and predictive factors were not found.
