Abstract

Introduction: The measures taken to control the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in a reduction in the number of admissions for other infectious diseases. It is therefore necessary to describe this phenomenon based on concrete data.

Objective: Describe morbidity aspects and service indicators for the year 2020 in relation to the two previous years.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. A review was carried out of data records kept at the statistics, economy and intensive care departments of Paquito González Children's Hospital in Cienfuegos, with the purpose of collecting and comparing information about the study variables corresponding to the years 2018, 2019 and 2020. Identification was made of the number of admissions for pneumonia, bronchiolitis, laryngitis, acute diarrheal disease, viral meningoencephalitis, bacterial meningoencephalitis and sepsis, as well as the total number of admissions, occupancy index, days / patient, materials and drugs expenses, central venous approach, pleurotomy and mechanical ventilation.

Results: A decrease was observed in the incidence of acute respiratory infections and acute diarrheal disease in the year 2020 in comparison with the two previous years, not so of sepsis and infectious neurological syndrome. A reduction was also observed in the number of invasive medical procedures and materials and drugs expenses.

Conclusions: The health measures implemented to control the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e. physical distancing and personal protection through the use of face masks and frequent handwashing, have had a positive impact on the incidence of diseases with the same epidemiological transmission characteristics.
